We are busy taking care of our outer body parts because we think it will reflect our beauty. But an outer appearance does not come beautifully until it has been taken care from inside. For example, we take in more sugary fluids inside of drinking pure water. This can have a very bad effect on our kidneys. People don’t try to understand how vital kidneys are for human bodies. Kidneys have many important functions in our bodies, for example-

1. Filtering of blood
2. Excretion of hormones
3. Removing the body’s excess water dispensing through urine
5. Neutralizing acids
6. Absorption of minerals
7. Eliminating toxic substances.

People usually take it for granted because kidneys are regarded mostly as one of the minor organs of the body. Unintentionally many habits done by us can have a bad impact on our kidneys. For example:

1. Smoking

Smoking is such a habit that can affect all the other organs including the kidneys. Through several studies, it has been proved that kidney disease shares a link with smoking. The test results conducted by experts found out that smoking hinders with the productiveness of medicines prescribed to alleviate high blood pressure. High blood pressure is the main cause of kidney diseases.
Apart from this, smoking slows the flow of blood to vital organs. In addition to this, smoking accelerates the loss of kidney functions for people who already have existing kidney disease.

2. Too much alcohol

Occasional drinking or on other words drinking in moderation is okay. One person can drink a glass of wine or say, a bottle of beer as a part of a celebration. However, consuming alcohol more than it should cause even a healthy person to develop liver, kidney, and cardiovascular diseases. Beside the common negative effects of drinking alcohol includes impairment of rational judgement. Moreover, it adds on the list loss of liquid in the body.

3. High protein diet

Eating meals which are rich in proteins in excess amounts cause a person’s kidneys to overload its metabolism. This results in an increased risk of kidney disease. 5. Too much coffee

Caffeine intake had repeatedly shared a link to the presence of kidney stones. The most common of all kidney stones, Calcium oxalate stones, are created from the combination of crystals of oxalate and calcium. Caffeine increases calcium levels in a person’s urine,based on a recent study. These left researchers to conclude that drinking too much caffeine can basically increase the risk of developing this particular kind of kidney stones.

6. Too many salty foods

Researchers bring to light the connection between salt intakes with that of kidney disease. In taking too much salt increases the body’s urinary protein. Normally the human body needs salt to function properly. But too much of it might lift up blood pressure as well as a worn down the kidney. Therefore, experts recommend that a person can have about 5 grams of salt in a day.

7. Delay in responding to “call of nature”

It is very important to empty your bladder whenever you need in order to keep the kidneys safe. Delaying the urge to your response to urinate may result from bacteria to breed in the urine. Urinary tract infection is caused by these harmful bacteria. Besides, these deleterious bacteria are also known to cause the kidney infection. Why are the kidneys important?

-the kidneys are excretory organs, removing mainly nitrogenous waste products (such as urea), excess water and mineral salts in the form of urine.
-the kidneys are osmoregulation. They regulate the salt and water balance of the body fluid. When the other conditions are constant, an increased intake of liquid food, an increased rate of tissue respiration or a reduction of sweat secretion by the skin will increase the amount of water present in the blood. In such cases, the kidneys will absorb less water.

What happens when the kidneys fail?

Kidneys may fail for a number of reasons. High blood pressure and diabetics are common causes of kidney failure. In such cases, kidney failure may occur over a few years. Constant heavy drinking of alcohol may also cause kidneys to slowly lose their function. Kidney failure may also occur suddenly after major surgery or a severe injury.
Suppose, if one of the kidneys fails to function, still a person can lead a normal life with the other kidney. But if both kidneys stop functioning, the person will die unless he or she is given proper medical treatment.
Patients with kidney failure may get a kidney transplant. A donor, who has two healthy kidneys can donate one kidney and live with the remaining one.
If a kidney donor is not available, the patient can be treated with dialysis by means of kidney or dialysis machine.
